Bacteriostatic water for injection, with 0.9% benzyl alcohol
BAC WATER 3ml
Sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. That is the whole difference from plain sterile water, and it is the one that matters: the preservative lets the stopper be pierced several times without the contents becoming contaminated, which is exactly what is needed when a compound vial is reconstituted and used over several weeks. It is the diluent used to prepare almost every compound in the catalogue.
- Purity
- Water for injection, pharmacopoeia grade
- Presentation
- Glass vial with a pierceable multi-dose rubber stopper.
How it works
- The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth in the vial once the stopper has been pierced.
- It maintains sterility across successive uses, not at the moment of the first draw.
- It plays no part in the activity of the compound being reconstituted: it only dissolves and preserves it.
Qué dice la evidencia
- 0.9% benzyl alcohol is the recognised preservative for multi-dose injectable preparations.
- Contraindicated in neonates because of its association with gasping syndrome.
Route described in the studies
- Route
- It is not administered on its own. It is the diluent used to reconstitute a lyophilized compound.
- Preparation
- Draw the calculated volume and direct the stream against the wall of the compound vial, never straight onto the powder. Swirl gently until fully dissolved; do not shake.
- Application site
- Not applicable.
Documented effects
- Transient stinging at the application site, attributable to the preservative
- Hypersensitivity reaction to benzyl alcohol, infrequent
When it is not used
- Neonates and infants: benzyl alcohol is associated with gasping syndrome
- Known hypersensitivity to benzyl alcohol
- Not to be used as a diluent for compounds that require preservative-free sterile water, or those that require acetic acid
Storage
- Lyophilised
- Not applicable: the product is a liquid. Store at 20 to 25 °C, protected from light.
- Reconstituted
- Once the stopper has been pierced, use within 28 days. Refrigeration is not needed while unopened.
- Shipping
- Stable at ambient temperature. Do not freeze.
Preguntas frecuentes
Can I use plain sterile water instead?
For a single draw, yes. For a vial you will draw from several times, no: without a preservative every piercing of the stopper is a chance for contamination, and the solution stops being safe within days.
How much is needed per vial?
It depends on the concentration you are after, and the calculator settles that: give it the milligrams in the vial and the dose, and it returns the diluent volume and the exact mark on the syringe.
Does it work for fragment 176-191?
No. That compound does not dissolve well at neutral pH and needs dilute acetic acid. With water alone, undissolved particles remain and the real dose stops being the calculated one.
