Head to head: tirzepatide beat semaglutide on weight loss
SURMOUNT-5 compared both peptides directly in 751 adults with obesity without diabetes over 72 weeks.
SURMOUNT-5 was a phase 3b trial that compared tirzepatide directly with semaglutide, something rare between molecules of the same family. It enrolled 751 adults with obesity without type 2 diabetes.
At 72 weeks, tirzepatide was superior in percentage weight lost and in the share of people reaching 10, 15, 20 and 25% reductions. Several cardiometabolic risk factors also improved more.
In three points
- Direct comparison of two peptides, phase 3b
- 751 adults with obesity, 72 weeks
- Tirzepatide superior at every weight-loss threshold
