Kisspeptin triggered egg maturation in in-vitro fertilisation
A pioneering study showed this natural peptide can replace the classic hormonal trigger in IVF.
People with mutations that abolish kisspeptin signalling are infertile: the peptide is key to the hormone surge that precedes ovulation. On that basis, this study used kisspeptin-54, the main form circulating in humans, in women undergoing in-vitro fertilisation.
Kisspeptin successfully triggered egg maturation and opened a line of research that continued with trials in women at high risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.
In three points
- Human study in IVF patients
- Kisspeptin triggered egg maturation
- Led to later trials in high-risk patients
